George Anson Johnston, Jr., 81, of 8 Lenhart Avenue, Bemus Point, died at 1:15 a.m. Saturday (October 13, 2001) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, he was born August 22, 1920, in the family home in Bemus Point, a son of George Anson and Charlotte Lucille Lenhart Johnston. He graduated from the former Bemus Point High School in 1938 and graduated from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in economics. While in college he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He also attended the Harvard School of Business from 1942-1943. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as a naval officer, reaching the rank of Lieutenant junior grade, during World War II. He was a third generation co-owner and manager of the Hotel Lenhart in Bemus Point. In earlier years, he was an investment analyst while living in Steubenville, Ohio, and had also worked at a security dealer in Buffalo from 1946-1949. He was a lover of the arts and classical music. He had a great love for the Chautauqua Opera and he almost never missed any of the productions during the Chautauqua Season. He also loved to play the piano and spent many hours entertaining people at the Hotel Lenhart. He also was a lover of animals, taking in many stray cats and dogs over the years. One of his greatest interests throughout his life was studying world history. He considered the Fred Banse-Fay family of Fluvanna as his close family friends. Surviving are a nephew, John Lenhart Johnston, Jr. of Valencia, Pa.; three nieces: Barbara Jane "Bebe" Stanbury of Hammondsport, N.Y., Margaret Pardee Hynes of Charlotte, N.C., and Patricia Ann Pardee of Wrightsville Beach, N.C. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Lenhart Johnston, who died April 11, 2000; and a sister Jane Johnston Pardee, who died August 28, 1992. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Strunk Road, Jamestown, N.Y., 14701; the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department, Bemus Point, N.Y., 14712; or the Bemus Point Library, 13 Main St., Bemus Point, N.Y. 14712.
